Special Educational Needs & Disabilities (SEND)
The Department for Education (DfE) has funded more than 500 practitioners, including SEN Specialist Leaders of Education.
The Department has funded two partnerships between special and mainstream schools in each region to undertake school to school reviews of SEND provision and identify and test opportunities for collaborative working practice across the sectors to improve provision:
- nasen is the National Association for Special Educational Needs – a charitable membership organisation that exists to support and champion those working with, and for, children and young people with SEND and learning differences.
- Whole School SEND currently delivers on the DfE contract for SEND workforce development, with nasen as the contract holder. You will find a range of DfE-funded resources to support professional development in SEND on the SEND gateway. nasen membership is free so sign up to benefit from both nasen and WSS resources and information.

School improvement for SEND
The SEND Review supports schools to raise standards for children with SEND through a bespoke package of support. The review helps schools to identify areas for improvement within their SEND provision, equip those supporting school improvement to review and create improvement plans for SEND provision, and help embed a focus on SEND into school improvement practices.
