This week's headlines

This week we saw government announce the availability of scholarship funding for teachers considering undertaking a National Professional Qualification (NPQ). Below, I have provided detailed information about the scholarships and the new and reformed NPQs. Applications are now welcomed and we have received a number of applications already. Scholarship funding is confirmed for 2021-22 until the funding is utilised in full by schools across the country.

Schools are busy registering their Early Career Teachers, Mentors and Induction Leads for the Early Career Framework-based induction all ECTs taking up their first teaching post in September 2021 are entitled to. We have partnered with Ambition Institute to deliver the Early Career Teachers programme. Again, below, we have provided more information on this offer and how to register.

Schools with ECTs also need an Appropriate Body to oversee the induction year and the assessment of the ECT. Our new school-led service is outlined below.

Finally, this week we launched the Bradford Opportunity Area-funded coaching offer for schools. Full details, including how to register an interest in this are available here.

I hope you have a wonderful week.

Best wishes

Paul Butler

Director of Bradford Teaching School Hub

National Professional Qualifications (NPQs) and scholarship funding

The National Professional Qualifications (NPQs) are changing. From September 2021, three new specialist programmes are introduced and the three leadership programmes reformed.

These are available to all schools: nursery, primary, secondary, special, alternative provision and post-16.

Scholarship funding

The DfE has announced the availability of scholarship funding for schools, including:

  • fully-funded NPQLTD for all schools
  • fully-funded NPQH for headteachers in the first two years in post. This is measured at the point of application to the lead provider
  • fully funded NPQs for schools within the top 30th percentile in relation to pupils on pupil Premium as of the end of the previous academic year

Full details are available here:

Early Career Framework (ECF)

Bradford Teaching School Hub, working in partnership with Ambition Institute, has welcomed the massive response from Bradford schools and trusts and our partners beyond Bradford. We continue to take registrations for our Early Career Teachers programme and this is likely to remain open during the summer.

Register for the Early Career Teachers programme

Schools that have registered with us often still need to complete their onboarding form on My Ambition. We have updated our guidance to support schools that, due to email filtering, may not have received an email to prompt them to do this. The updated instructions are provided via the link below. This is a quick process and we would appreciate schools completing these steps in the next few days.

Appropriate Body service

As well as providing Early Career Teachers with an Early Career Framework-based induction, schools also need to register with an Appropriate Body (AB). The AB oversees the assessment of the ECT against the Teachers' Standards.

We now offer a school-led AB service that seamlessly integrates with our ECF offer. Full details are available via the link below.

More information

Schools can register for the service via the link below. Under the heading 'Register Your School' in the blue box, please complete the form provided. Even if you have used NQT Manager before, we need you to take this step.

Bradford Teaching School Hub, led by Copthorne Primary School and Exceed Academies Trust, has a leading role in signposting and delivering teacher development support to all 213 Bradford schools and our partners in other regions wishing to access support from Bradford Teaching School Hub.

The Hub helps to fulfil one of Exceed Academies Trust's ethical goals: to contribute to system-wide improvements in education.

Designated by the Department for Education (DfE) in February 2020, Bradford Teaching School Hub’s core functions support schools and trusts to invest in their workforce to grow, recruit, develop and retain the very best teachers, support staff and leaders. We will achieve this through a place-based approach to signposting and delivering high-quality progressive teacher development programmes that complement the internal support provided by schools and trusts. Our vision acknowledges teacher and leadership development are two of the most important forms of school improvement. We will achieve this by enhancing partnership working with schools, trusts and high-quality providers; improving the communication of opportunities with the workforce; introducing new professional learning opportunities; supporting teachers and leaders to make informed choices when selecting continuous professional development (CPD) and support, and ensuring that no school is left behind.

Find out more about our vision, strategies and priorities here.
