DfE Updates Guidance on Early Career Teacher Training

On 22 April 2025, the Department for Education (DfE) released updated guidance outlining changes to the training and induction of Early Career Teachers (ECTs) starting from September 2025. All training programmes will now align with the new Initial Teacher Training and Early Career Framework (ITTECF).

Summary of Key Changes

  • The term Early Career Teacher Entitlement (ECTE) replaces “ECF-based training”

  • Mentor training for new mentors is reduced to one year

  • Programmes will include ready-to-use mentor session materials to help reduce workload

  • Programmes will offer diagnostic tools to help ECTs identify and focus on their specific development areas

  • Age phase- and context-specific resources will be provided, including support for teaching pupils with SEND

  • Programme content will assume that most ECTs begin induction with a solid understanding of the framework from ITT

  • Schools delivering their own training can access DfE-accredited School-Led Materials

In response, Ambition has updated its curriculum and ECTE programme accordingly. To ensure that all Headteachers, Induction Tutors, and Mentors are fully informed of these changes, we are hosting online briefing sessions:

  • 11 June (3:00–4:00pm)

  • 13 June (9:30–10:30am)

We’re pleased to share that all our Spring NPQ cohorts have made a strong start to their programmes.

The Department for Education (DfE) has launched an 18-month formal review of NPQs to strengthen the evidence base supporting the NPQ frameworks.

Looking ahead, the DfE has confirmed a shift to a single annual NPQ cohort starting next academic year—expected to begin in the Autumn term, potentially in November. We are currently awaiting further updates on scholarship availability, which will be confirmed following the upcoming spending review.

FREE EAL and SEND WEBINAR

The Bell Foundation is offering a free integrated provision course focused on supporting learners with both EAL (English as an Additional Language) and SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities). An initial briefing will take place on 22 May. You can find more information and register for the session  here

Exceed Teaching School Hub, led by Harden Primary School and Exceed Academies Trust, has a leading role in signposting and delivering teacher development support to all 215 Bradford schools and our partners in other regions wishing to access support from Exceed Teaching School Hub.

The Hub helps to fulfil one of Exceed Academies Trust's ethical goals: to contribute to system-wide improvements in education.

Designated by the Department for Education (DfE) in February 2020, Exceed Teaching School Hub’s core functions support schools and trusts to invest in their workforce to grow, recruit, develop and retain the very best teachers, support staff and leaders. We will achieve this through a place-based approach to signposting and delivering high-quality progressive teacher development programmes that complement the internal support provided by schools and trusts. Our vision acknowledges teacher and leadership development are two of the most important forms of school improvement. We will achieve this by enhancing partnership working with schools, trusts and high-quality providers; improving the communication of opportunities with the workforce; introducing new professional learning opportunities; supporting teachers and leaders to make informed choices when selecting continuous professional development (CPD) and support, and ensuring that no school is left behind.
