Essential actions before the end of term

This email contains a summary of essential teacher development actions for schools and 16-19 providers this term (download a PDF version here). It should act as a useful reference point to ensure your school has taken all the necessary steps to set up induction for an Early Career Teacher or to apply for National Professional Qualifications.

For a smooth transition to September, please ensure these key actions are completed as a priority and before end of term:

Appropriate Body

If you have appointed an ECT 1 (first year of induction) for September, please ensure you have register them on ECT Manager.

If you have appointed an ECT 2 (second year of induction) to commence employment in September, they also need to be registered with the Appropriate Body via ECTs Manager.

If your ECT is currently registered with us and they will continue to be employed at your school next year, no action is needed. This information will be gathered via the term 3 assessment/progress review.

EEF Subsidised Trial for schools – English Mastery

I’m Nick, the head of English Mastery, a curriculum programme from Ark Curriculum Plus. You may be aware that we have received funding from the DfE’s Accelerator Fund to work with the EEF to run a Randomised Control Trial for our English Mastery programme (read more here).

This is the second time we are running the trial. The first time was disrupted by the pandemic, but the EEF have just published a report that shows teachers feel English Mastery improved students’ attainment in English, developed their teaching practice, and reduced their workload. Because of these incredibly positive findings, the DfE are funding a new research trial.

We’re currently recruiting schools from your region, and the trial may be of particular interest for driving school improvement in the Opportunity Area.

We are now actively recruiting schools to the trial and we would really appreciate an opportunity to explore with you. If you would like to hear more, I would be delighted to discuss in more detail.

Exceed Teaching School Hub, led by Copthorne Primary School and Exceed Academies Trust, has a leading role in signposting and delivering teacher development support to all 215 Bradford schools and our partners in other regions wishing to access support from Exceed Teaching School Hub.

The Hub helps to fulfil one of Exceed Academies Trust's ethical goals: to contribute to system-wide improvements in education.

Designated by the Department for Education (DfE) in February 2020, Exceed Teaching School Hub’s core functions support schools and trusts to invest in their workforce to grow, recruit, develop and retain the very best teachers, support staff and leaders. We will achieve this through a place-based approach to signposting and delivering high-quality progressive teacher development programmes that complement the internal support provided by schools and trusts. Our vision acknowledges teacher and leadership development are two of the most important forms of school improvement. We will achieve this by enhancing partnership working with schools, trusts and high-quality providers; improving the communication of opportunities with the workforce; introducing new professional learning opportunities; supporting teachers and leaders to make informed choices when selecting continuous professional development (CPD) and support, and ensuring that no school is left behind.

Find out more about our vision, strategies and priorities here.
